Originally hunters referred to these animals as the Big 5 due to their difficulty in being hunted.
The Buffalo is considered the most dangerous of all of the Big 5, being incredibly territorial they can charge at astonishing speeds and can inflict severe damage if not death. Elephants with their incredible strength, Lions with their amazing speed and agility, Leopard's elusiveness, and of course the massive and near extinct Rhino.
Big 5 Safari Holiday into Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve
All of our Big 5 Safaris are conducted in the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park. This 96000-hectare reserve is rich in history and in itself rescued the Rhino from near extinction in the 60's when less than 100 Rhinos roamed the planet. Shaka Zulu himself made use of the lower Umfolozi as his personal hunting grounds and remnants may still be seen today.
Officially opened in 1895, the park was divided into two separate parks formerly known as the Hluhluwe Game Reserve and the Umfolozi Game Reserve. Today one is able to enjoy both parks when entering either gate.
Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park Wildlife includes the Big 5, Wild Dogs, Cheetahs, Nyala, WaterBuck, Hyenna, Hippo, Kudu, Nile Crocodiles, Giraffes, and many other species.
Big 5 Safari Holiday into iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa's first World Heritage site
Officially declared a world heritage site in 1999 (Unesco) iSimangaliso Wetland Park is an amazing park to visit while on Safari in South Africa. This is the 3rd largest protected park in South Africa and covers an area of 3280 square kilometers. Ironically the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park are only 54km apart from one another, yet another reason to visit.
St Lucia a small town on the southern side of the park forms part of the heritage site. This is one of the only towns that have Hippos roaming through it during both day and night time.
