Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve may be divided into two seperate Reserves the southern Umfolozi Game Reserve and the northern Hluhluwe Game Reserve. The Northern Hluhluwe is more popular due to easy access , travelling from the Hluhluwe Town to the game reserve gate is 13km one will enter the Memorial Gate.

The southern section the Umfolozi Game Reserve is accessed by the Nylazi gate and is 28km for the town of Mtubatuba ion the R618.

Peak Season’s all of the major school holidays in South Africa contribute to the reserve being busier, however the Northern Hluhluwe Game Reserve remains busier than the Southern Umfolozi Game Reserve.

Major Holidays in South Africa are from November to mid January, June to mid July. All long weekends are also very busy with the Easter weekend being the most popular, accommodation within the reserve may be booked up well in advance.

Self Drive Safari versus Organised Safari Tour

This would be dependant on local knowledge, the allocated time you have to spend in the reserve and research that one may have done. Self Drive Safaris are a fun and exciting way to discover the Hluhlluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve, top tip would be to ensure that you either download the hluhluwe game reserve map or purchase one from the entrance gate. Try to gather as much information from various sources ie, safari tour operators, accommodation establishments in the surrounding areas and also read the latest news and sightings on this website.

Organised Safari with a Tour Operator

Benefits are that most Safari operators offer an all inclusive safari outing, this will include conservation levy, meals and experienced game rangers. With their experience one not only gains valuable information but also a better chance of witnessing the animals that you are here for.
