Hluhluwe Umfolozi Park previously divided into two seperate parks now is united and one may enter at either side and travel to either side without having to exit and re-enter from the other gate. The two primary gates in the Hluhluwe Umfolozi are the Memorial Gate in the Hluhluwe Park and the Nylazi in the umfolozi Park.
With 96000 hectares at ones disposal one has numerous hides, picnic areas, gravel and tar road to explore. What contributes to this unique area is its landscape with rolling hills in the Northern reaches of the Hluhluwe Park and its low level area in the south the Umfolozi.
Hluhluwe Park
Hluhluwe Umfolozi Park has the Big5 and lots more to offer for the traveller and explorer, the main accommodation area is situated at the Hilltopp Camp, here one has the choice of various types of accommodation, restuarant and conveniance store. The topograhy varies considerably to that of the Umfolozi Park, this side is a lot more hilly and offers one numerous vantage points from where to witness the various animal species. Hluhluwe Park becomes extremely busy during high season and sightings may beome quite crowded. Please be cuatious and do not drive off road to try and get better sightings. Within Hluhluwe Umfolozi Park one will see that numerous Hides have been developed for all to make use off. These hides are a good place to stop get out of the vehicle and stretch ones legs, please before doing so make sure you have looked around as wild animals may be in the area.
The hides well situated within the park, be patient as most of the hides are close to watering holes a top place to be when the park is experiencing its dry season. Speed limits within the Hluhluwe Umfolozi Park is 40km please adhere to this at all times, management roads are all marked with a no entry signs and at no time what so ever make use of them please.
The park also offers one picnic areas where one may enjoy a traditional South African barbeque, tables and toilets are available.
Umfolozi Park
The Umfolozi Park offers rustic accommodation (self catering & teneted camp), both need to be booked well in advance to avoid dissapointment. It is also from here that one may join in on a day guided walking safari, this is a great way to discover the reserve and the game rangers are splendid. Overnight walking trails are also available and one would deffinately have to book in advance due to popularity. Once you have enetered the Mpila camp area one will see the numerous rondavels that are available for accommodation , the area also offers a smaller conveniance store with just the basics, fuel is also available here as in the Hluhluwe Hilltop camp.
The Umfolozi Park has more access to rivers and hides established near to the watering holes, make use of this as most of the awesome sightings take place here. The Umfolozi also has great sightings of Wild Dogs and Cheetahs this is due to the vegetation and openness of the area. A lot less travelled due to access this side of the park really gets one closer to the feel of Africa. Picnic areas have also been established in this side so make sure to make use of them.
