It's so much more than just a Birders Paradise Mkuze Game Reserve offers sightings of Lions and Wild Dogs to mention but just a few of the incredible sightings that you too could enjoy.

Mkuze Game Reserve is situated in Northern Zululand, a 40 000 hectare Game Reserve world-renowned for its birding possibilities. Mkuze Game Reserve offers some incredible game viewing while within the reserve however it is the Birding that makes this game reserve so unique.

From Hluhluwe Game Reserve a mere 1 hour North one enters this paradise with loop roads, hides, and panoramic views. Its thick dense bush, grasslands, and pans give one a feeling of being in the true Africa of yesterday. Mkuze Game Reserve was proclaimed in 1912 and has since remained under the protection of KZN Wildlife. The reserve has various accommodation-styled huts within the reserve and makes for some adventurous safari action. It boasts the Big 4 and incredibly 400 plus species of Birdlife may be encountered. Travel to the various pans within Mkuze Game Reserve, Nhlonhlela, and Nsumo in the North and East, the pans are home to Nile Crocodiles, Hippo's, Pelicans, and Duck's and Geese which gather during various time of the year.

The Mkhuze River runs along the northern and eastern borders with fig forests along its banks. Various animal species that may be found in the Mkuze Reserve include White and Black Rhino, Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Giraffe, Nyala, Wildebeest, and much more. Rare species include Cheetah, Wild Dog, Hyenas, and Suni.

Did you know:

That Lions were reintroduced into the Mkuze Reserve in December 2013 this comprised of 1 Lioness and three sub-adult males. Then in April 2014 an additional two young males were introduced, followed by an additional three lionesses. Some cubs have increased the numbers and once again in September 2016, three more male lions were added to the Reserve.

3-4 Hour Mkuze Safari

uMkhuze harbors an astonishing diversity of habitats ranging from the eastern slopes of the Lebombo Mountains to stretches of rolling acacia savannah. swamps. woodlands and riverine forest. Wildlife includes black and white rhinos. elephant. giraffe. leopard. cheetah. buffalo and a multitude of plains game. Lion were reintroduced to the park in 2013 making it a Big 5 reserve. The birding is exceptional - 420 species recorded.

Mkuze Game Reserve also offers one a chance to enjoy one of Three hides that have been placed within the reserve, a great place to witness animal species and Birdlife.

Accommodation within the reserve includes tented camp self-catering, a 6-bed cottage, and rest huts. Day safaris and night safaris are available and we would highly recommend the Night Drive Safari.
